Mitsutoshi Kubota, the president of the anime studio SHAFT, told the audience at the American premiere of Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion- that the studio's production of Mekaku City Actors is slated to start in April. He added that the studio is still working on the Kizumonogatari anime and asked fans to "please wait a little bit" for it.

Tower Records reported in August that Akiyuki Shinbo (Puella Magi Madoka Magica,Bakemonogatari) will direct the anime of Vocaloid musical composer and writer Jin's (Shizen no Teki-P) Kagerō Project (Heat Mirage Project) under the title Mekaku City Actors. Tower Records reported at the time that the on-air date for the anime is still undecided.

SHAFT is producing Kizumonogatari just as it did for the adaptations of NisiOisin's other Monogatari light novels. Monogatari Series Second Season is currently airing in Japan, and Daisuki is streaming the series as it airs. The television anime will cover most of the Second Season arc — Nekomogatari (White), Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari, and Koimonogatari. Hanamonogatari will be presented separately.
